Farmington Valley

Check out The Farmington Valley!

When we say "The Farmington Valley", generally that means Avon, Simsbury and Farmington, those being the large "core" towns. We've been referred to as bedroom communities for Hartford, Connecticut's capital city, only 20 minutes away. These towns have character and charm...lots of it, with plenty of historical sites. We have bed and breakfasts, inns, restaurants that were once railroad stations, mills or taverns, farms that are still farms and ones that are now other things, like recreation areas, polo grounds, camps or golf courses, even a vineyard! And yes, a river runs through it all: the Farmington River, which is our most precious resource, providing 100% of the drinking water for the Greater Hartford area, and it's the only river in Connecticut to receive the federal Wildlife and Scenic designation. A trail runs through it all, too! The Farmington Valley Greenway and River Trail: a 25 mile multi-use trail designed for walking, jogging, biking, rollerblading and is wheelchair accessible, passing through five towns and connecting to several miles of other hiking and biking trails!

The weather? Well, as Mark Twain put it (having resided in the Hartford area), if you don't like the weather, just wait a minute! All four seasons occur with great splendor. With each season comes plenty of excitement and anticipation for the traditions that take place connected to each. We are "so VERY New England"!

So much goes on here, it's difficult to put it into a simple paragraph or two! You can browse historic sites; hike and bike along the river; canoe, kayak, go tubing, swim, fish; go hot air ballooning; camping; dine riverside; go to a play; the symphony outdoors; go horseback riding; cross-country or downhill skiing, or skating; take a horse drawn sleigh ride; golf; tennis; the list is endless!

We have soccer, hockey, football, lacrosse, little league, swim teams, a full time training facility for world class figure skaters, white water good enough to host national canoe and kayak competitions, country clubs and PGA golf courses; Septemberfest (we can't wait for October!), a lobster fest, the Talcott Mountain Music Festival, Firemen's Carnivals, locally made ice cream (it's possibly the best in the world!), local honey and maple syrup, and fresh produce that you can pick yourself.

This is the home of the second largest historical center in Connecticut (the Phelps Homestead in Simsbury), the Farmington Valley Arts Center, The Talcott Mountain Science Center, Antiques Weekends, Poetry Festivals, the biggest tree in Connecticut, the first state prison in the nation (now an historical site) and yes, a commercial center that will satisfy even the most discriminating of shoppers with trendy boutiques, restaurants and cafes, movie theaters, at places such as the new Shoppes at Farmington Valley, Simsbury Commons, Avon Marketplace, Riverdale Farms, and the Westfarms Mall.

Of course, along with all of our wonderful quaint New England charm and character, we have state of the art health, wellness and fitness facilities; computer and technology services, professional and financial services and so much more.

It's easy to see why the Farmington Valley is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. Along with all of our fabulous recreational activities, the schools are the best in the country! Our schools are top notch, award winning schools with over 90% of students going on to higher education. Check out local School Information to get the scoop on our excellent schools.
