Founded in 1806, Canton is the smallest of the
valley towns, but is now also the fastest growing. It is basically made up
of four villages: Collinsville, a center of a lively artist community, with its
spectacular examples of early Victorian architecture, Canton Center, a small
village along Cherry Brook Road, North Canton where several of the newer
subdivisions are sprouting up, and Canton Village, the retail district along
Route 44 with a variety of commercial services, antique shops and The Artist's
Guild art gallery. Canton blends historic charm, rural, suburban and retail in
distinctive fashion.

Some of Canton's Special Places
Downtown Collinsville
A "Currier & Ives" picture from every angle, the village of Collinsville is the heart of
Canton. Located by the river with steep hills in the distance, the village
beckons you to visit its quaint specialty shops, fine restaurants, the
quintessential New England church, and even the official Canton Town Hall.
The Canton Historical Museum
Located in picturesque downtown Collinsville, volunteers have
gathered an interesting collection of town memorabilia.
The River Walk in Collinsville
What a beautiful scenic area this is alongside the Farmington River. You can walk
the boardwalk or relax on a bench and take in the views.

The Shoppes at Farmington Valley
Located on Route 44 where a public golf course used to be, is the
newest and largest retail development in the area. Several popular and well
known shops, restaurants and food outlets are here.

The Collins Co. Axe Factory This
group of brick mill buildings along the Farmington River is a piece of early
Collinsville history. Since the mid-1960's, these quaint buildings house art
studios/workshops and antiques shops.
Collinsville Canoe & Kayak
Right
alongside the Farmington River, here is where you can rent a canoe and paddle
on the flatwater right out back.
The Canton General Store
Over 100 years old, this store is still heated by a wood stove and delivering
groceries along with your pizza!
The Roaring Brook Nature Center
Tucked in the woods on Gracey Road, is this very active nature center with
programs for kids and adults, i.e. nature walks, instructional programs, and
a very popular folk music concert series in their program room.

Relocation >Evaluating Neighborhoods
When sellers think about curb appeal, they usually think about their own front yard and the effort required to keep the house looking good. When prospective buyers look at homes, they evaluate both the house and the neighborhood. The price that your neighbors get for their house will have an impact on the value of your home.
This knowledge makes its own case for doing your part to make the neighborhood appealing. The time to take remedial action is before you think about moving, especially if your house is the one with peeling paint, over-grown bushes, rusty bicycles, and cracked sidewalks. The value of your home will be largely determined by the recent selling prices for comparable properties, and neighborhood "eyesores" do not help to keep the values up. Even if you don't feel that you will ever move again, you will enjoy living in a house that is a real source of pride.
