Avon was settled in 1645 and originally known as the "Land of Nod". It was incorporated as a town in 1830 and named after the Avon River in England. Dairy farming, raising poultry and growing tobacco were predominant occupations. The Climax Fuse Company is responsible for the old brownstone buildings which are now the Town Offices and Farmington Valley Arts Center.

Today, Avon is a fast growing, thriving community with top notch schools and a myriad of commercial centers, professional services and recreational options. The convenient location, beautiful landscape, availability of newer homes, and state of the art amenities makes this town an attractive choice to make your home.

Special Places

Countryside Park Huckleberry Hill Road. Pretty pond with waterfall and covered bridge. There's a small sandy beach for letting the little ones wade in the water and a  small playground with baby swings. Cozy building, with fireplace, deck, and kitchen, can be reserved for group functions. Picnic tables for public use and  the upper pond is good for quiet fishing.

Fisher Meadows
Route 10 to Old Farms Road. Soccer fields, baseball and softball fields attract lots of activity. But beautiful wooded trails, meadows and unspoiled Spring Lake are  the real attractions. Walk or bike on the unpaved but flat path that loops around the lake. Dogs on leashes, please. Canoes and rowboats can be put in at  a slope by the main entrance. There are a few picnic tables that are popular with office workers, who escape here for some lunch-hour peace. Outdoor  recreation area with 233 acres of Baseball and Soccer fields, Spring Lake and hiking trails.

Sycamore Hills Park Recreation Area
Next to The Senior Center on West Avon Road. Tennis, basketball, and a big green lawn for soccer. Sandy badminton court. The town pool offers swimming lessons. Avon's big public playground is here with playscape equipment for toddlers as well as their intrepid older siblings. There are open picnic tables and a covered picnic area for group and summer camp use.

Farmington Valley Arts Center
